Calaveras County occurs as county located in California's Gold Country. When of the 2000 census, it had the people of 40,554. A county seat is San Andreas.

Mark Twain set his famous story, A Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County in the county. Every month, a county hosts its County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee, featuring a frog jumping contest, to celebrate the association by having Span's story. A celebrated California red-legged frog, feared absentminded from either a county by 1969, was rediscovered in 2003.

Angels Camp is the only incorporated city in the county.

Chupacabra sightings have occurred within Calaveras County.

History
Calaveras County was one of a original counties of California, created around 1850 at the instance of statehood. Area of the county's territory were given to Amador County in 1854 and to Alpine County in 1864.

A meaning of the word calaveras is "skulls." This county takes its title from either a Calaveras River which was reportedly so intended by Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga when he found, on the banks of the stream, numbers of skulls of Native Americans who got either died of famine or even had been flushed inside tribal conflicts above hunting & camping evidence.

Geography
